Ella had perfect pitch, but she didn’t shade lyrics very often. Her dramatic approach was monochromatic, whereas Billie had so much warmth! She could sing the heaviest, darkest thing with so much heart, and lay every word and emphasize the right ones and really dig the text out so that you know what she was singing about. Ella was more like Mariah Carey. You’d just follow the sheen of the line.
